There can be multiple causes of hair loss in women. Stress can be a major cause and can manifest itself in hair loss three or four months after illness or major surgery. This type of hair loss be temporary; the hair will regrow when the body gets over its stress. There is no real treatment for hair loss of this type for women.
Hormonal Imbalance
Sometimes hormonal imbalance can cause female hair loss. An over-active (or under-active) thyroid can cause hair to fall out. Treating the thyroid issue can assist with the hair loss. Hair loss can also occur if the female and male hormones known as androgens and estrogens are out of balance. Correcting the hormone imbalance may help stop the hair loss.
Hair loss in a woman can occur about three months after a pregnancy. During pregnancy women tend not to lose the hair that is naturally lost during each hair growth cycle. When the hormones return to the normal levels of before pregnancy, the hair that wouldn’t fall out, now will fall out, and the normal cycle of hair growth and loss will return.
Reactions To Medications
Certain medications can also cause hair loss in a woman. This type of hair loss will improve when you stop taking the medications causing the problem. Medicines that can cause hair loss in a woman include blood thinners, medicines used for gout, medicines used in chemotherapy, too much vitamin A, birth control pills and antidepressants.
Sometimes certain infections can also cause hair loss in a woman. Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children as well. You can treat the infection easily with anti-fungal medications and promote hair regrowth.
Underlying Diseases
Last, but not least, hair loss in a woman can occur because of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Because hair loss will often be an early sign of a disease, it is important to find the cause so that you can get back to your normal head of hair.
When it comes to treatment for women with hair loss, many of the underlying problems are treatable or cure themselves in their own time. If you have been pregnant and are now losing your hair, you needn’t be concerned. Your body is just getting back to the normal process of cyclical shedding. However, if you cannot identify the reason for the hair loss you should seek medical advice to find any underlying cause.
