Male hair loss caused by DHT is frequently an inherited condition and is determined by the man’s sensitivity to DHT which is produced by a reaction between 5-alpha-reductase enzymes and testosterone. The more DHT in the body, the more likelihood there is of experiencing hair loss.
DHT causes male pattern baldness by shrinking the hair follicles which, in turn, causes the production of hair that is much finer than normal. Eventually the hair follicles can shrink to a point that hair growth is more or less non-existent. DHT blockers can stop the hair loss caused by DHT by preventing the chemical reaction between 5-alpha-reductase enzymes and testosterone from taking place.
Over-the-Counter DHT Blockers
Several DHT blockers can be purchased over the counter for DHT hair loss. A few of the more popular ones are marketed under the names HairGenesis, Procerin, and Avacor. Avacor is available as both a pill and a shampoo which, when used together, are supposed to assist in hair regrowth.
Like Avacor, HairGenesis comes in both pill and topical forms, both of which are supposed to arrest the formation of DHT.
Unlike the previous two DHT blockers used for hair loss, Procerin is a pill that is taken twice a day. Both Avacor and Procerin contain a combination of herbs such as saw palmetto and chemical treatments such as minoxidil.
Clinical Studies
HairGenesis is the only over-the-counter product used to treat DHT hair loss caused which has carried out a clinical study using FDA-regulated IRB-monitored measures. The study was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine and found that 60 per cent of the people who took HairGenesis softgels were rated as having grown hair on their last clinic visit.
Avacor and Procerin do not appear to have conducted either independent studies or studies using FDA-regulated IRB-monitored measures such as HairGenesis has conducted.
The choice of treating DHT-related hair loss with an with over-the-counter DHT blocker is one that has to be made by the person suffering the hair loss. Cost will be a factor in the decision as the HairGenesis softgels are not inexpensive and the treatment needs to be ongoing. Once you stop taking the DHT blocker your hair will again start to fall out.
