DHT Hair Loss

Male hair loss caused by DHT is frequently an inherited condition and is determined by the man’s sensitivity to DHT which is produced by a reaction between 5-alpha-reductase enzymes and testosterone. The more DHT in the body, the more likelihood there is of experiencing hair loss.
DHT causes male pattern baldness by shrinking the hair follicles which, in turn, causes the production of hair that is much finer than normal. Eventually the hair follicles can shrink to a point that hair growth is more or less non-existent. DHT blockers can stop the hair loss caused by DHT by preventing the chemical reaction between 5-alpha-reductase enzymes and testosterone from taking place.
Over-the-Counter DHT Blockers
Several DHT blockers can be purchased over the counter for DHT hair loss. A few of the more popular ones are marketed under the names HairGenesis, Procerin, and Avacor. Avacor is available as both a pill and a shampoo which, when used together, are supposed to assist in hair regrowth.
Like Avacor, HairGenesis comes in both pill and topical forms, both of which are supposed to arrest the formation of DHT.
Unlike the previous two DHT blockers used for hair loss, Procerin is a pill that is taken twice a day. Both Avacor and Procerin contain a combination of herbs such as saw palmetto and chemical treatments such as minoxidil.
Clinical Studies
HairGenesis is the only over-the-counter product used to treat DHT hair loss caused which has carried out a clinical study using FDA-regulated IRB-monitored measures. The study was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine and found that 60 per cent of the people who took HairGenesis softgels were rated as having grown hair on their last clinic visit.
Avacor and Procerin do not appear to have conducted either independent studies or studies using FDA-regulated IRB-monitored measures such as HairGenesis has conducted.
The choice of treating DHT-related hair loss with an with over-the-counter DHT blocker is one that has to be made by the person suffering the hair loss. Cost will be a factor in the decision as the HairGenesis softgels are not inexpensive and the treatment needs to be ongoing. Once you stop taking the DHT blocker your hair will again start to fall out.

Is There A Correlation Between Stress and Hair Loss?
June 7th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedMost people will have heard or read that there is a connection between stress and hair loss. That is very true – indeed, in more ways than one. Even what you eat during times of stress will play a role. Let’s discuss how stress and hair loss are associated.
Stress
Stress is the cause of many health related problems. In today’s hectic world, with the hurried lifestyles that most of us lead, there are several situations, we continually encounter situations that lead to stress. The list is long … emotional stress, physical stress, marital stress, financial stress, job-related stress, the stress of illness, can all have an impact on your health.
Stress and Hair Loss
Medically ‘telogen effluvium’ is defined as hair loss induced by the sudden onset of stress. Some people may not be aware that stress is connected to their hair loss because the hair loss may occur after the stressful event has passed.
Stress can causes the hair follicles to stop producing hair, i.e. enter a resting phase. The hair will remain in this phase for up to three months during which the head will continue to shed an unnatural amount of hair. Stress and hair loss go hand in hand.
Another way stress affects hair loss is through nutrition. When stressed, many people adopt poor eating habits which can lead to poor nutrition, which, in turn, leading to more hair loss.
The Good News
The good news is that stress related hair loss is usually not permanent and can be easily treated. Treatment includes herbal hair loss remedies like saw palmetto, specific medications and tonics for your hair. These treatments are extremely effective and provide quick results. So don’t stress over your hair loss — your follicular beauty will return as soon as you learn to balance the stress in your life and maintain good nutrition.

Why You Should Use Saw Palmetto For Hair Loss
June 7th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedUsing Saw Palmetto For Hair Loss
There are several reasons you should consider the use of saw palmetto for hair loss, the main one being it is a natural herbal remedy with no documented side effects. In an era when drugs are routinely being recalled for horrific side effects, a herbal hair loss remedy can offer a safe and economical alternative.
History of Saw Palmetto
Native Americans traditionally used saw palmetto (serenoa repens) for hair loss and other conditions involving the hair, scalp and skin. The use of saw palmetto for hair loss has the backing of hundreds of years of use by the indigenous peoples of the Americas.
Using Saw Palmetto Externally
One option for using saw palmetto for hair loss is to massage it into the hair and scalp. You can purchase saw palmetto as an oil extract or as an ointment. One of the reasons saw palmetto has been so successful in the treatment of hair loss, particularly when used externally, is that its components are lipophilic in nature. This means they are well extracted into the oil base typically used, and are easily absorbed by the skin, therefore providing a more productive treatment.
Use the saw palmetto externally by massaging the oil extract or ointment into the hair and scalp and letting it remain on the hair for at least half an hour, although best results are gained when it is left on overnight.
Taking Saw Palmetto For Hair Loss Internally
One of the advantages of saw palmetto as a hair loss treatment is that it can be used both externally and internally at the same time to promote hair regeneration, and prevent additional hair loss. It is thought that saw palmetto does this by restraining the effects of testosterone on the prostate. This in turn keeps the testosterone from turning into DHT, a compound that results in male balding. The recommended dosage is at least 160mg daily, and as much as 320 mg. If you are using saw palmetto oil extract the recommended dosage is ½ to 1 tsp per day.
Saw palmetto is one of the most readily obtained and easily used treatments for hair loss today. It has a positive history of use and it can be taken both internally and externally to increase the benefits. In a world that is becoming highly dependent on drugs, using a herbal treatment for hair loss like saw palmetto gives those with hair loss problems a safe, natural alternative.

Home Hair Loss Remedies
Looking for a hair loss remedy? Not sure if you should try minoxidil or finasteride? Thinking about making an appointment with your doctor to discuss your thinning hair?
There are several effective hair loss remedies and it’s probably wise to start by talking to your doctor. There’s more than one cause for hair loss, and different types of hair loss require different treatments.
Not every hair loss remedy is effective, though. People have been trying to come up with a cure for baldness for centuries, and have found some pretty innovative treatments. None of the following treatments has FDA approval, and none has been tested in large-scale studies. No claims are made for their effectiveness.
Every do-it-yourself home hair loss remedy is either taken by mouth or rubbed onto the scalp.
Hair Loss Remedy Preparations Taken by Mouth

* Coriander leaf (cilantro) juice
* 1 tsp apple cider vinegar in water
* Smoothie of banana, honey, yogurt and skim milk
* Juice mixture of any of the following: alfalfa, lettuce, fresh spinach, cilantro
New Hair Loss Remedy Preparations to Rub on the Head

* Mix 1 cup mustard oil with 4 tablespoons of henna leaves
* Use amla oil, either alone or mixed with coconut milk and/or lime juice
* Mix equal parts of alcohol, borox and quinine. (Don’t try this at home—it could give you a nasty rash)
* Rub cow dung onto the bald spot (not in my house…)
* Mix a chopped onion & 20 birch leaves in a bottle of alcohol. (There’s no mention of what kind of alcohol…)
* Grind a piece licorice and mix with a little saffron in skim milk (Do you know how much saffron costs? And you want to rub it on your head?)
* Use coconut milk
* Or aloe vera juice
* Mix honey and egg yolk and apply to the scalp
* Rub the bald spot with an onion until it’s red, then rub honey into it
* Mix castor oil and almond oil, warm it and rub into scalp
* Grind black peppercorn with either lemon or lime seeds and rub the paste on thinning spots.
* Put raw mango pulp in a jar of oil and leave it to age for a year, then rub it on your head
* Make a paste of warm olive oil, honey and cinnamon

Some Causes of Sudden Hair Loss

Hormonal Imbalances
Both male and female sex hormones have an effect on hair growth, and when they get out of balance you can lose hair. This happens commonly in women whenever they have reproductive changes such as menarche, pregnancy, childbirth or menopause. With normal changes like that, the problem corrects itself when hormone levels stabilize. Sometimes, though, your hormones need to be regulated with medications.
Another hormone imbalance that causes hair loss is hypothyroidism. Having your thyroid checked and taking medication if you need it will prevent hair loss from low thyroid hormones.
Medications
Some medications may cause hair loss. Blood thinners, gout medications, birth control pills and
antidepressants are among the culprits. If you start noticing excessive hair loss a few months after starting a new medication, talk to your doctor about it. She may change the medication to prevent hair loss from continuing.
Fungal Infections
Adults aren’t often affected by fungal infections of the scalp although it can be the cause of temporary hair loss in infants and children. Treating scalp infections when they first appear will prevent hair loss of this kind.
Hair Care
Tightly braiding your hair, as in cornrows, can cause hair loss due to constant traction on the hair follicle. If the follicle is damaged, you will lose hair. This is usually temporary unless the problem goes on long enough for the hair follicles to be scarred. If the follicles are scarred, they won’t grow new hair. This type of hair loss is preventable by either keeping the braids loose or by not leaving them in for long periods.
Permanents and hair dye may cause inflammation of the scalp or damage to hair follicles. To prevent hair loss from hair care products always follow all package directions completely, or have a qualified hair care professional carry out the treatment for you.
You can’t prevent hair loss that’s genetic. You can prevent hair loss that has some underlying cause, though, by identifying and correcting the cause. Consult your doctor for assistance in identifying the cause of your hair loss prior to commencing any treatment. Most hair loss can’t be prevented, but it can be managed.
